How a visit works
From the quote to a calibrated car
Five steps, one appointment for the glass and the calibration.
- 01
Give us the vehicle and the VIN
Year, make, model and the VIN from the base of the windshield or the driver’s door frame. Impex uses it to order the right glass and to see which sensors the car carries.
- 02
Quote, insurance and a time
Impex quotes the glass and the calibration together, works out with you whether it goes through your comprehensive coverage, and agrees where and when.
- 03
The windshield goes in
The old glass comes out, the new one is set in urethane and the camera is mounted back on its bracket. Impex puts a windshield at about one hour, plus a short cure.
- 04
The camera is aimed
Static with targets, dynamic on the road, or both, as the maker’s procedure for your vehicle asks. Impex says most calibrations take 30 minutes to 2 hours.
- 05
Back on the road
You are told when the car is safe to drive. Impex says most drivers are back on the road within two hours; skip the car wash and do not slam the doors for 24 hours.

What ADAS is
The camera and radar that need calibrating
ADAS stands for advanced driver assistance systems: the features that beep when you drift over a lane line, warn you about a stopped car ahead, brake when you do not, and hold a set gap on cruise control. On most newer cars two sensors do the seeing. One is a camera mounted high on the inside of the windshield, behind the rearview mirror. The other, on many cars, is a radar unit in or behind the front bumper or grille.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety describes front crash prevention as systems that use sensors such as cameras, radar or lidar to detect a vehicle ahead. They warn the driver, precharge the brakes and, in most cases, brake automatically if the driver does not respond. Lane departure warning uses a camera to track where the car sits in its lane. I-CAR, the collision repair training body, says the forward facing camera controls lane departure warning, collision braking and adaptive cruise control.
These systems are worth keeping accurate. In IIHS research, forward collision warning with automatic braking cut rear-end crashes in half, and the warning alone cut them by 27 percent. Twenty automakers covering 99 percent of US light vehicle sales committed to making front crash prevention standard, and a 2024 federal rule requires it on nearly all new vehicles of 10,000 pounds or less by September 2029. More of the cars in North Raleigh driveways carry a camera behind the mirror every year, and more of their windshield jobs come with a calibration attached.

Why the glass matters
Why a new windshield means ADAS calibration in Raleigh, NC
The forward camera does not float in the cabin. It clips to a bracket bonded to the glass. When the windshield is replaced, the camera comes off with the old glass and goes back on with the new, and its aim shifts. The shift may be tiny, but the camera judges lane lines and the distance to the car ahead far down the road, where a tiny error at the glass grows into a large one.
I-CAR lists removing the windshield, removing the rearview mirror or removing the camera itself as events that may require the camera to be aimed again. It also says requirements vary by year, make and model, which is why it keeps a search tool of the makers’ calibration requirements. Your vehicle’s VIN is what tells Impex which procedure applies.
Impex performs ADAS calibration on site immediately after windshield replacement, and its technicians complete both static and dynamic calibrations in one visit. That is the point of this site: the glass and the calibration as one job, without a separate trip to a dealer afterwards. The details for the windshield camera are on ADAS camera calibration in Raleigh.

Two methods
Static and dynamic calibration
There are two ways to aim a camera, and the vehicle maker decides which one your car takes. Some cars need both.
| Static | Dynamic | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens | Targets are set at measured points in front of the vehicle and a scan tool runs the aiming procedure | The vehicle is driven at or below a set speed for a set time or distance, sometimes with a scan tool connected |
| The car | Standing still | On the road |
| What it needs | Level ground and clear space in front of the car | Roads clear of snow and rain, without heavy traffic or many curves |
For a dynamic calibration around North Raleigh, the stretches of I-540 across the north of the city and US 1 toward Wake County’s northern edge give the long, well marked lanes the procedure looks for, outside the rush hours. A static calibration needs a flat, open place for the targets. Where your car’s calibration is finished depends on which method it needs, and Impex will tell you when you book.
Radar
The radar in the bumper is a separate job
Not every calibration is about the windshield. I-CAR says forward radar sensors sit in or behind the front bumper or grille and feed adaptive cruise control, collision braking and collision warning. Calibration is normally required after the radar is replaced, and may be required after the bumper or grille is removed or after front structural repair. Static radar targets are generally metal and pyramid shaped and need a large area clear of metal objects.
So a windshield alone does not usually mean radar work, and a quote that adds radar work to every windshield job deserves a question. A fender bender that moved the bumper is a different story. Impex performs ADAS radar calibration on site, without a separate dealership appointment. See ADAS radar calibration in Raleigh.
Repair first
A chip may not need a new windshield at all
Calibration follows a replacement, so a chip repaired early can save you the calibration as well as the glass. ROLAGS, the repair standard run by the National Windshield Repair Division, treats stone breaks up to two inches across and single line cracks up to 14 inches as repairable. Impex’s own test is simpler: a repair may work when the damage is small, shallow and away from the edges of the glass.
- Usually repairable: a small chip or bullseye, away from the edges and out of the driver’s direct view.
- Usually a replacement: a crack that reaches the edge, damage right in front of the driver, several breaks at once, or damage in the patch of glass the camera looks through.
- Calibration: a resin repair leaves the glass and the camera bracket where they are, so it does not move the camera. A replacement does.
If the camera’s view is the problem, even a good repair can leave a mark in the exact spot the camera reads through. That is a case for new glass, and new glass on a camera car means ADAS camera calibration.
Insurance in NC
How the claim usually works
In North Carolina glass damage normally goes under comprehensive coverage. The NC Department of Insurance lists breakage of glass, and missiles or falling objects, among the losses that Other Than Collision coverage pays, less any deductible. North Carolina has no law that waives the deductible for glass, so unless your policy includes full glass coverage, your comprehensive deductible applies. Ask your insurer whether the calibration is part of the glass claim; the ADAS calibration cost page explains what to ask.
Two more points from NC law and the NCDOI. Under G.S. 58-3-180 the policy must let you choose who repairs your vehicle, and the insurer pays the same whichever you choose. And a comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it does not add Safe Driver Incentive Plan points, though your insurer may still look at how often you claim. Impex works with all major insurance providers.

Questions
What North Raleigh drivers ask about ADAS calibration
Short answers. Each inner page has more.
Do I need ADAS calibration after a windshield replacement?
If the car has a forward camera on the windshield, usually yes. I-CAR lists windshield removal as an event that may require the camera to be aimed, and the requirement depends on the year, make and model. Give Impex the VIN and you will be told.
How long does calibration take?
Impex says most calibrations take between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the vehicle and whether it needs a static calibration, a dynamic one or both.
Do I have to go to the dealer afterwards?
No. Impex performs ADAS calibration on site immediately after the windshield replacement, and radar calibration on site too, without a separate dealership appointment.
Does a new windshield mean the radar needs calibrating?
Not usually. On most cars the radar sits in or behind the front bumper or grille. Bumper or grille removal, front structural repair or a replaced radar are what bring radar calibration into it.
What if the camera is not calibrated?
The systems rely on the camera reading the lane and the traffic ahead correctly. A camera aimed slightly off can read them slightly wrong, which is why the makers list windshield replacement as a calibration event.
Will insurance pay for the calibration?
Glass breakage is a comprehensive loss in NC, paid less your deductible. Ask your insurer whether the calibration is included in the glass claim; see the calibration cost page.
Is this site the business called Raleigh Auto Glass?
No. Raleigh Autoglass is a website of Impex Auto Glass. It is not connected with any other business that uses a similar name.
Does NC inspection check my windshield?
NC’s annual safety inspection checks your wipers, not the glass itself (G.S. 20-183.3). A crack in your line of sight, or in the camera’s, is still worth fixing.

New glass in front of the camera means the camera gets aimed again. Ask for both in one quote.
